Privacy policy

Last updated 21 October 2026

Who runs this site

worldmap. is a personal, non-commercial project run by an individual based in the UK. For the purposes of UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), I am the controller of any personal data you send through the site.

To get in touch about privacy, including any of the requests described below, use the Feedback button on the map page and include your email address so I can reply.

Data that stays on your device

Features like your list, travels, notes, packing lists, home airport, travel-style result and light/dark theme are saved in your browser's local storage. This data never leaves your device unless you export it yourself, and I can't see it.

Stored itemWhat it holds
worldmap_favouritesCountries you've added to your list
worldmap_beenCountries you've marked as visited
worldmap_note_*Your notes for each country
worldmap_packing_*Your packing-list progress for each country
worldmap_airportYour chosen home airport
worldmap_styleYour travel-style quiz result
worldmap_themeLight or dark mode

Local storage is strictly necessary to provide the features you ask for, so no consent banner is needed. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings. If you use Export, the file is encrypted with your password in your browser and saved to your device; it isn't uploaded anywhere.

Feedback form

If you send feedback, the following is sent to me by email via Web3Forms, a third-party form-delivery service:

As with any web request, Web3Forms also receives your IP address and basic browser information. It uses these to deliver the message and filter spam, which may involve passing your IP address and email to its anti-spam providers (CleanTalk and Akismet). Please don't include sensitive personal information in your message.

Why: to read your feedback, fix mistakes and reply if you asked me to. The lawful basis is my legitimate interest in improving the site and responding to people who contact me.

How long: I keep feedback emails for up to 12 months and then delete them, unless an ongoing conversation needs them for longer.

Where: Web3Forms is based in India and runs on Amazon Web Services and Cloudflare, so your feedback may be processed outside the UK. Web3Forms says these transfers are protected by Standard Contractual Clauses. It may keep its own copy of submissions for up to three years; see Web3Forms' privacy policy for details.

Your feedback is never sold, shared for marketing or used for anything else.

Other services the site uses

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data I hold about you, and to ask me to correct or delete it, or to object to or restrict how it's used. Because the only personal data I receive is feedback you've sent, these requests are simple: tell me roughly when you sent it and from which email address, and I'll deal with it within one month.

If you're unhappy with how your data has been handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, though I'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Children

The site is a general-interest travel guide. It doesn't knowingly collect personal data from children; if you're under 13, please don't include your email address in feedback.

Changes

If the way the site handles data changes, for example if analytics or accounts are added, this page will be updated first and the date at the top will change.
